Our Prison

Remember, Query Con starts next week. We hope to see you here.

But for this week, I've been posting "what if?" questions in the hopes of jump starting your next novel. Or short story. Or whatever you want to write. Today's question doesn't have a long explanation as to how I came up with it. It just is. So, without further ado...

What if Earth was constructed as a prison of sorts? What if our ancestors were put here as a punishment or a way to isolate us from the rest of the intelligent species in the universe?

Ha! That would be hilarious - and presumably they were punished for behaving exactly as we are. Reminds me of a scifi story I read in which a very bad death dealing alien society was enclosed in a Dyson Sphere in order to protect everyone else from them. Of course they got out.

I actually had a story I was going to write along this vein. Basically, Earth was turned into a penal colony while man went out to live in the solar system and on terraformed moons, etc. Then monsters from outside the solar system attacked humans and destroyed all of the colonies in a single week. All that's left is earth and the prisoners that live there need to defend it against the coming menace.
