What if? It's a question that can take your novel in a whole different direction. It's a question that can begin a whole new story...
What if you* were wronged so badly that you contemplated revenge on the one who wronged you*? How far would you* be willing to go?
*You'd never really resort to revenge, would you? So, by "you" I mean any character in your current WIP.

Revenge is a one-sided emotion for my characters. Add Regret and Guilt and it becomes something more.
Give the antag a moral reason for the evil done. It makes the protagonist feel Remorse after Revenge is taken.
Then the protag is as bad as the antag, a whole new journey.
It only hurts the person who wants the revenge. In a dire situation, I might react differently, but otherwise, I let God sort it all out.
Now, my character Byron? No such scruples. And he got his revenge.
@Huntress--Well said.
@Alex--This is true. But some people have to learn this lesson for themselves.
