Division: Change Yourself?

It's book tour week, but instead of the usual book promotion posts, I'm changing things up a bit. I'm mashing them up with the "what if?" posts. It's an experiment, so you'll have to tell me what you think.

Today Lee S. Hawke is joining us. Take it away, Lee...

Hi everyone!

My name is Lee S. Hawke and I write science fiction and fantasy storytales. And as is the case with a lot of speculative fiction, I often find myself asking ‘What if?’

In line with Unicorn Bell’s ‘What if’ posts, here’s one from me. I recently published DIVISION: A COLLECTION OF SCIENCE FICTION FAIRYTALES. In one of the stories, gender, race and beauty have all been ‘transcended’. The CTR machine has made it possible for anyone with money to reshape their looks and their body, but at a terrible social price.

So what if you were able to change anything about yourself? What would you change? And what would you stop other people from changing?

Lee S. Hawke is the author of fantasy/mythological short story The Changeling and the Sun, published by Ideomancer Speculative Fiction magazine and free for you to read!

If you enjoy classic science fiction shorts exploring the divisions between mind, technology, body, and grief, check out the FREE sample of Division: A Collection of Science Fiction Fairytales now!

What would I change about myself? I'd ramp up my metabolism so that I could burn the calories I consume. As for something I wouldn't allow someone else to change about me? Well everything. I don't like the thought of other people having that kind of control over who I am.

If I could change one thing about myself it would be my back...I have a rod in my back because of scoliosis and I would love it if that rod was gone and my spine was healthy.

Congrats on your release, Lee!

I'm with Michael Offut, increase my metabolism. That would be so cool. And although the idea seems intriguing, what would the world be like if we could all change ourselves to look like... well, what would we then consider the ultimate in beauty or perfection?

Weight control seems to be a theme, and I'm right there too. I might not want others to change my cynicism though. Optimism is over-rated :)

Congrats on the release Lee. I love short stories.

Cool cover! Sign me up for metabolism change. It would be easier than learning self control, right?

I'd like to keep my predisposition to believe people are good.

When asking my inner child what I would change about myself, the obvious comes to mind. Stuff like ambition, appearance, or social deficiencies. But I'm taking another route...as defined by my genre.

Magic. Yes, if I could change something about myself I would do magic. But not ordinary. I would have the ability to cause others to give absolute truth. Think of what it would mean for a reporter asking a question at a news conference. The truth. No spin. Or a man accused of a crime that he did not commit. Yep, magic.

In others, what I would stop from changing? The innocence of children. Or the expectation of something better on the horizon for adults. Of hope.

I hadn't heard of this site before. I would change probably not much, unless I could make myself younger again :)

Very cool cover. Congrats, Lee!

I don't know what I would change about myself. Probably my eating habits, because I eat entirely too much junk food.

I would change the unhealthy habits I once had, like smoking. But overall my life has been pretty darn good so I can;t complain.

Great answers. As for me, I don't know what I'd change. I find that any change I wish to make I can actually make. There are times when I'm convinced I can do magic.

As for stopping other people from changing, maybe I'd make plastic surgery more difficult. Not for those who have had disfiguring injuries, but for those who are good but think they need to look better.

I think if I could change anything, I'd have a hamster's metabolism!! I don't know if our hamster was a crack baby or what, but it Never stops running on that wheel! Think of how much I could get done if I never got tired :-)
