In keeping with the A-Z theme that’s running around the
blogosphere right now, today’s post begins with the letter K, which in this
case stands for know the biz.
My thought is, if you want to be a writer, especially one
who gets published, you should know the business you’re getting into. I think
most of us come into this with the notion that we just want to write stories
and then progress to wanting to see our stories in print. The problem is, if we
don’t learn how to make those stories as good as they can be and find out how
to get them out in the world, our chances of success are pretty slim.
When I first started writing there weren’t nearly as many
resources for writers. Heck, there wasn't even the internet!
These days, however, there are tons of resources, which make it easier than
ever to learn the craft and business of writing.
One of my favorites is Writer’s Digest Magazine. It has been
consistently helpful and fun. What are some of your favorite resources? What’s
helped you know the biz?

Agreed! It's essential to know the business, and to know the specifics of the business that relate to the type of stuff you're writing too.
I'm fortunate to live in an area that offers a lot of conferences and workshops for writers. I try to go as often as I can to hear what industry professionals have to say about the state of the market and publishing in general. Gotta keep learning. :)
There is so much to learn and so many great resources, online and otherwise. Learning about the business is essential if you plan on making it a career.
I agree with L.G, conferences have helped me the most. Not everyone can afford to travel to these, but there are some great online ones. In fact, the first conference I attended was the free Muse Online Writers Conference . It's every October. Check it out!
