Dear Confused Facebook Author

Dear Confused Facebook Author,

Many authors have a hard time deciding what they should share on their author Facebook pages and what they shouldn’t. I can only tell you what I do and give you some ideas. After that, you’ll have to decide what you feel you should share.

On my author page, which can be found HERE, I like to share ANYTHING that has to do with writing, which includes updates on my publishing and every once in a while a note about my editing. I always share my new blog posts. For the writers who follow me, I like to share writing tips. To create a balance, I’ve also been posting some of my (amateur) photography. You’ll also see pictures of my cats. For readers, I like to share fun facts they wouldn’t know about my books/character as well as quotes taken from my published works.
Now that you know what I do here’s a list of more ideas.

Thanks for this info. Very helpful as I do get stuck wondering what to post on my page.

Good advice. I've been struggling with making my FB page really work. Thanks!

@Taylor and Debra, you're both very welcome! I hope this post gives you some ideas so you will have new things to post on your pages. :)

You're welcome, Stanalei! :)

That was really helpful! I've let my author page languish; I'm not really much of a FB person, but I really should put more work into it. After all, people have liked me and follow for a reason - they deserve some effort on my part in return.

indeed a very helpful list!!! Having to balance family interests with my writer connections (and interests) get downright tricky!

This is helpful! Thank you for sharing.

@Li, FB can be really fun once you get into the groove of posting things and know what types of posts your followers connect with more. Sometimes you just have to experiment.

@OEBooks, it can be tricky, for sure.

@Starr, you're welcome!

What a cool post, Chrys. I wish you'd posted this two years back, as I was completely hopeless on my Fan page. Not that I'm much better now. I especially liked the tips about talking about your writing process. I hadn't thought of doing that. I'm sure people would be interested. Loved your blog!

I post my life also, like pictures and comments. And, of course, cat videos. How did we ever survive without funny cat videos.

I share all of your suggestions on my page as well as our Unicorn Bell FB page.
Great post, btw.

Thank you for the information. Having just published my first novel I'm new to promotion, so I really appreciate the excellent advice.

I don't have a Facebook author page. I have a hard enough time keeping my business page updated.

Good info! I do a few of these on mine, but now have more ideas! I tend to only share my blog posts one a week so it doesn't seem spamy. Maybe I should do it a little more. I mean, I blog three to four times a week.. hm.

@Hebby, two years ago I was just starting out on FB. :P

@Huntress, cat videos are awesome! Thank you!! :D

@Annalisa, thanks!

@Allison, You're very welcome!

@Liz, it is a pain to keep pages updated.

@Madilyn, I'm glad you have more ideas. :) You definitely should share all or at least the blog posts you think are most important on your FB page.

I have a hard time trying to decide what to put on my author page and what to put on my personal page. Anything having to do with my new release I want to put on both, but I don't want to inundate my friends and family with the information twice. But who knows if they'll get it if they liked my author page, since the posts there don't go to all the people who liked your page. It's all such a dilemma. :)

Christine Rains said...

Wow. Lots of excellent ideas! Thank you. :)

Chrys Fey said...

@Maria, I've stopped sharing my book news and writing updates on my personal page, because those people who want to know have liked my author page and will get the updates there. But you're right about the posts not being seen by everyone. That's just something, unfortunately, we have to deal with when it comes to FB.

@Christine, thanks and you're welcome! :)

great advice!! i need to put up more pictures and fun stuff.
and i tweet a lot of those things, then the tweets automatically post to my facebook author page =)

Thanks once more for all your generous advice, Chrys. Great, as usual!!

Chrys Fey said...

@Tara, pictures are a lot of fun on FB and get the most attention.

@Ava, you're welcome! And thank you! :)

I'm glad I stumbled across this post because I was thinking of starting a facebook fan page so I could link it to my blog without linking my personal account. Thanks for sharing!

Chrys Fey said...

@Elizabeth, I'm glad you stumbled upon it too. :) On my blog, I also did a post about starting a FB fan page. Here's the link:

Thanks for this post. I usually post my blog posts, updates on my writing and share reading and writing quotes and images, that I can relate to, share my thoughts on and/or just plain because I found it interesting or funny.
