P - Unusual Words - A to Z Challenge

Chrys’s Theme: Unusual Words

I love to fit unusual words into my writing if I can. I also love to discover new-to-me words. They are so much fun. I enjoy looking at them, saying them, and writing them. Yes, I have a real love for words. I bet many of you do too. So I am sharing 20 odd words for each of my letters.

Today is P!

Pacificator – peacemaker
Pallescent – pallor
Palsy-walsy – weakling
Papule – pimple
Parapraxis – slip of the tongue, forgetfulness, mistake
Parry – dodge, prevent
Parsimonious - stingy
Peerless – unrivaled, alone
Pell-mell – confusion
Penitent – remorseful
Perfidious – faithless
Pith – essence
Pneuma - soul
Poky – dull
Poltroon – coward
Prate – chatter
Puckish – playful
Pule- whimper
Pussyfoot – sneak
Pygmy - tiny

I’ll be back for X!

  1. I knew most of those words but not all.

  2. Great "P" post. I've heard of most of the words but would be hard pressed to come up with clear definitions. For poky what came to mind was Hoky poky...definitely not a dull dance.

  3. @Em-Musing, like you, I had heard of a lot of these but didn't know their definitions. :)

  4. Great words. Papule...(my computer dictionary isn't even recognizing it!) sounds like a zit to me! Poltroon is new to me as well.

  6. When using unusual words in our writing, we must take great care to fill in the reader on what they mean. Roger Zelazny used to drive me to distraction by quoting French poetry without providing the translation! :-)

  11. @Bish, yes, a couple of words my computer programs didn't recognize either, but I tried to only share ones that were recognized. X is another story. haha

    @Ellen, I liked pneuma too. :)

    @Roland, spot on advice.

    @Darla, glad you liked my list!

    @Sarah, that's good. I'm hoping to introduce everyone to a few new words. :D

    @Patricia, Pith has two different meanings. It's also a soft tissue in plants or animals.

    @Liz, I did. :)
