Well. Ok then. New Plan!
I have a different question.
What are your writing quirks?
I don't mean your physical writing quirks. Though, if you are only able to write sitting at your desk dressed in a pink tutu and a football jersey...yah. I wanna know about that.
I'm talking about your typing quirks. Have you noticed any? And now that I'm asking, have you noticed any that are now going to drive you batty? Bwahahah!
I was innocently typing along in my wip the other day and I noticed I do this thing.
You know how you have a running narrative in your head of what you're trying *desperately* to keep up with with as you're typing...but then sometimes you change your mind. Or sometimes you hit a snag.
In my head I'll have "With
a soft click his face swung open revealing a complex working of gears
and springs. Working quickly and with practiced strokes, he pressed a
combination of small latches and buttons hidden within his face." ... and then it's like my brain splits in two. I wanted two completely different things to happen. So I hit space. As you would. And stopped. Thinking.
Then when I decided how to continue, I backed up, DELETED the space. Hit space again and continued on. As though that space was suddenly no good! BAD SPACE!
Now that I know I do this, I notice I do it all the time. with commas, with words, but most often with the space that would start the beginning of a new sentence!
So! Do any of you have quirky writing habits?
Or am I all alone?
*sniff*
That's hilarious! I can't say anything, though. When I notice a misspelled word or typo, I can never just fix it by adding the missing letter or whatever -- I *have* to delete the whole word and retype it.
ReplyDeleteYup. I do this too. *Phew* I'm not all alone.. :)
DeleteI do the same thing. I doesn't bother me, but it drives other people nuts.
DeleteI tend to leave words out when the ideas are really spilling out. And I never notice they're gone when I do quick re-reads. It's only during the more intense editing when I realize I typed every-other-word in a sentence.
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, I might need to see a neurologist about that... :-)
I hear ya. It's like your fingers can't keep up... I'm surprised they haven't come up with a word for that yet.
DeleteYes, that bad space! As if it went stale and had to be replaced with a fresh space!
ReplyDeleteWhen I pause for thought while I'm writing, I keep my fingers on the keyboard, and often don't realize I'm pressing "D". I end up with whole rows of ddddddddddddddddddddd. Or just single letter d in random spots in the manuscript.d Like that. d
It's never any other letter. Always D.
HA! Exactly! Stale space.
DeleteMaybe that particular finger has more bone density then the others...;)
Quirky? I don't know if this applies but since I moved my keyboard to another desk, I type like this. ypys;;u omvp,[trjrmdon;r/ (totally incomprehensible)
ReplyDeleteI reckon the slight adjustment to the height and position of my keyboard is enough to screw up my finger alignment
Doesn't that drive you nuts. One stupid minor adjustment. And whammo. Suddenly you can't type. AND you can't seem to re-adjust! Argh!
DeleteI don't know. I haven't noticed. I'll have to think about it. I'm sure I do, but nothing comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteI find I delete entire sentences because I notice one wrong letter, like it's quicker to delete than to add a comma or something.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it probably is. Just holding down the back key then doing all the clicking and high-lighting and what not. WAY too involved.
DeleteI also delete the whole word that's incorrectly spelled. It seems easier than pressing keys I can't even name.
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY!
Deleteok. you guys are all just strange.
ReplyDeletekidding. I'm sure I do something odd; I just don't know what it is!
I also delete a whole word and write it again instead of deleting just the wrong letter or part of it :) For some reason it's quicker for me like that since sometimes I have to translate up to 15 pages a day :)
