How to Market a Bad Book

My ideas, newly formed, on how to sell massive numbers of books like Fifty Shades.

Number One: Bad writing is a marketing ploy. People are curious and want to decide for themselves if it is really as bad as critics say:

"That stove is hot."
"Really?" *touches it* "OW!"
"Told ya."

Number Two: The author says Fifty Shades was Twilight FanFic.

Author: "This novel is based on *insert famous book here*."
Reader: "OOOOOOOOh. I must buy this novel."

So. What do you think about my theories?

It depends, if I like the sound of the synopsis I will read it to see for myself, but sometimes I am put off a bad review. If ot claims to be like another author I'm often sceptical...

it's one way to sell stuff, that's for sure. Sort of like making yet another spider man movie - it hardly matters whether it's good.

Go to Hollywood for examples on how to market something awful and make a killing. They do it all the time.

you just have to target the shallow part of the readership and that's the way to score success :) These TWILIGHT wanna-be-authors are the same thing that Danielle Still and Sidney Sheldon were in previous decades. Trash. Total trash.

That stove is hot. Yeah, there are way too many people who have to see for themselves.

I think a lot of people think it's an insult to take someone else's word for it. Like they're not thinking for themselves if they don't also touch the hot stove. Either that or it's simply an "everyone else is doing it" thing. Either way, it's sad.

And I've tagged you, Huntress, over on Building Castles on the Beach. Come on by and pick up some questions to answer if you'd like.
